Katerina Zacharopoulou’s work “Petronella Oortman’s Dollhouse” is a modular visual narrative of scenes from the life of a woman into the constructed world of a doll-house. Inspired by the original Dollhouse belonging to Petronella Oortman created between 1686-1710 and exhibited today at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Katerina Zacharopoulou’s domestic scenes consist of an assortment of personal Mementos, photographs and decorative objects.

Cut from their initial frame of reference, they become the components of a claustrophobic scenery that hovers between reality and fairy tale, dream and nightmare.

Several different mental and emotional processes happen inside there: reading, walking, cleaning, waiting, contemplation, nail cutting, writing. The woman’s behaviour is sometimes distinguished by a calm mood of introspection and sometimes moving in the boundaries of obsession and mental disorder.

The project is a production of the Thessaloniki Center of Contemporary Art-State Museum of Contemporary Art. It was designed as an in situ video-installation, and was initially presented at Paradisos Baths -Bey Hamam in Thessaloniki in 2011.

The exhibition of the work in the Benaki Museum consists of the video-performances that take place in the rooms of the Dollhouse. They set a path, with no logical sequence between acts, gestures, attitudes and behaviors that define gender identity. The work uses structural elements of the domestic environment in the process of subjectivity formation: the House “creates” its occupant the same way the occupant constructs her House.

The first section illustrates important aspects of life in the Aegean in the 1950s and 60s. At that time, everyday life flowed without electricity, roads, motor vehicles, telephones, running water and ferries. The infrastructures that were available to people in the '60s, had little changed compared to 5000 years ago.

The presentation is supplemented by an installation-video of eight minutes, titled Columns-Shadows, and images taken from the four elements of nature: earth, air, water and fire, which run through her subject matter, constructing and deconstructing the compositions of her works.

Opy Zouni / "Order in Chaos" Exhibition at Benaki Museum in Athens until 26/02/2017
Opy Zouni was one of the most important representatives of postwar geometric abstract art and neo-constructivist rationale of the second half of the 20th century. Having dual heritage (Greek-Egyptian), with a strong classical education, she adopted geometric structure and abstract mathematical thinking along with the modern conceptions of art she had encountered on hermany trips abroad.

Opy Zouni / "Order in Chaos" Exhibition at Benaki Museum in Athens until 26/02/2017
The focus of her exploration was the mental and, at the same time, emotional space, our familiar physical space.

Opy Zouni / "Order in Chaos" Exhibition at Benaki Museum in Athens until 26/02/2017
In Opy Zouni’s work art and science are inextricably linked. Science for her meant the investigation of reality while art was the expression of beauty. She used geometry as a door from the material world to the spiritual and created a virtual reality using Renaissance perspective freely, with one or more vanishing points. She walked a line between dream, fantasy and reality, logic and sensitivity, a scientific mathematical approach and spontaneity.
