Camera in love by Ed van der Elsken

Exhibition of Van der Elsken "The infatuated camera"

Ed van der Elsken is known as the most talented Dutch street photographer. When we learnt that Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam is presenting the largest exhibition of Ed van der Elsken's work (1925-1990) we could not but attend. We saw a large overview of the fimlic and photographic work of the artist. The short films iand his books were the oeuvre of this exhibition. Stedelijk museum has followed Van der Elsken’s work since the beginning of his career in the 1950s.

The photographer had a unique style, mainly black and white photography depicting simple moments of life. He roamed the streets of Amsterdam, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong searching for unique personalities. Ed van der Elsken was an unconventional personality and would build a personal relationship with those that he would photograph.

Scenes from the daily life of Amsterdam but also of orther cities like Paris and Tokyo reveal that van der Elsken was attracted by the simple and beautiful things in life. His book "Love on the left bank" has a number of photographs portraying the love between bohemian couples in Paris. Hripsime Visser is the curator of photography in this exhibition. He has also written widely on van der Elsken's work and curated numerous exhibitions of his work.
