Maysa Daw, a fresh and charismatic voice

Les Culturelles love discovering new artists and songs. We found Maysa's video (below) on Facebook. She decided to follow her dreams by launching an indiegogo campaign in order to release her first solo album. We were impressed by her voice and will to fight for her love for music and decided to interview her. Although, Maysa's songs are in Arabic this was not an obstacle for us to enjoy her lovely voice.
Maysa lives in Jaffa, so we Skyped in order to prepare this interview for you. She gladly accepted to introduce herself and work with us

Maysa, could you tell us a few things about you and how you started singing?

I grew up in an artistic home, and was raised in the art world. I started singing since I was very young. I had my first show in theatre at the age of 7 and first singing show at the age of 10. I always loved performing. When I was fifteen I started professional vocal lessons. Three years later I started writing my own music and performing with amazing local artists, like TootArd and Ministry of Dub-Key. I started studying music in TLV in Muzik-school for creation and production in 2012. During my studies I took types of music lessons, like producing, sound but also singing writing and composing. A year later I joined the amazing DAM and together we released “Who You Are”.

What is music for you and what do you want to achieve through your work?

Most of us, if not all of us, feel lost. We have an identity crisis. I always say that I got into arts before I even knew anything about politics, and it’s true. Although, I hate politics I don’t have another choice but to deal with it. As a Palestinian citizen it’s brought into my daily life regardless if I want it or not.The more I get into performing the more I realize that I have the privilege of singing and telling our story when a lot of people can’t. I want to share our story not because I want everyone to accept us but because hate is brought into our life through the media propaganda. I have a voice that I can use to express what a lot of us want to say but cannot. It is for the rest of the world, the Arab world, and mainly for ourselves. The way media portraits us evokes the world's hatress against us. The worst of all is that it’s making us hate ourselves and our traditions. It’s dividing us by making us believe that we are not worthy and that we are bad. This is the idea that I want to fight. I want us to be proud of what we really are and not create hate. Loving yourself when everybody else is trying to make you hate yourself, this is what I call true resistance.

You are now working on your first album, could you share with us a few things about it?

My upcoming album “Between City Walls” is my final project for my last year of studying. I worked on it during my last year in Muzik with two great friends ,Ohad Manor and Gil Meir, who were also classmates of mine back then. It was our final project. The album is recorded and almost ready and will be out soon! It has 8 tracks, all in Arabic except one that is English. It was so much fun working on it because I got to experience in many genres of music through it, and that’s the thing I like about it. You can feel that each song has a different touch and a different vibe. It was very experimental and eye opening for me.

If you would chose one piece of this album which one would you distinguish?

One of my favorite parts of the album is actually not a song. It’s a musical piece called “Radio”. Instead of singing lyrics, I had a few interviews with people, adults and kids from two Palestinian refugee camps near Bethlehem, Al-Azza and A’ida refugee camps. It is  sad when the adults talk on the other hand there is so much hope and innocence when the kids speak. They are so honest it’s really unbelievable. English translation will be available once the album is out!

What are you currently doing/planning regarding your work?

Right now I want to share the album with everybody and start moving forward. We (DAM) are starting to work on a new album soon. I’m so excited about that! I love collaborating with other artists, so I’m pretty much looking forward to what life is gonna bring me next.
