Edward Krasiński at Stedelijk Museum

UNTIL 15 OCTOBER

Stedelijk Museum, museum of modern art in Amsterdam presents the first retrospective of Edward Krasiński in the Netherlands.
Born in 1925 in what is now Ukraine, Krasiński is considered one of the most notable artists of Eastern Europe’s premier avant-garde. This exhibition will feature over fifty installations (sculptures and objects) from his entire artistic career.

Krasiński began his career at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow during the 1940s. In the early '50s he moved to Warsaw with a group of other avant-garde artists founding the Foksal Gallery which was the central hub for contemporary art in Warsaw in the 1960s.

Krasiński's work is inspired by pre-war avant-garde movements such as Polish Constructivism. The public can easily distinguish a wry sense of humor combined with fascination. Walking through an exhibition you can discover characteristic materials and patterns such as the use of blue Scotch tape. The artist started using the tape which later on became also his trademark in order to connect spaces and objects.

One of the most important moments for the artist was the Farewell to Spring in 1986, a ball in where the most influential figures of the Polish avant-garde were invited. Opposing to the Polish regime which at the time prohibited any gathering more than three people Krasiński and his friends organised this ball as a protest against the government.

In addition to Krasiński’s displays the visitor has the chance to watch the film Edward Krasiński’s Studio (2012) by French-American filmmaker Babette Mangolte. The film is about the artist’s Warsaw studio where he worked and met with world-class artists .The exhibition is curated by Leontine Coelewij, Curator Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Kasia Redzisz, Curator Tate Liverpool.

The exhibition is available for the public until 15th of October. Tickets can be bought online or at the entrance of the museum. Along with the ticket the visitor can take a free audio tour for more information about the artist and the exhibition.
