Foam Museum presents:

Matter by Daisuke Yokota and Los Alamos by William Eggleston

Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam hosts two exhibitions worth seeing.
The first one, located on the ground floor is that of the Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota. The Matter is three room-filling installations which revolve around the tactical aspects of photography. The photographer focuses on the outcome of the artwork which in this case is not determined by the camera but by experiments with the material forms of the medium. In his previous artistic practices, Yokota would re-use the images taken years ago and would represent them in different ways through various analogue processes. In this exhibition, the photographer reinvents the physical photo print and film and not the image.

"Matter" refers to all the photographic material, the roll of film, the hard disk, the negative, the printing paper and the computer monitor. Yokota is trying to focus the attention on the "body" of the photography. He seems to distort our perception of photography with this work. With this exhibition, the artist reveals his philosophy of photography and provides to the audience the chance to rethink how to relate to the medium.

The artist takes countless pictures which are saved on his hard disk. He is asked to choose a few among them, those photos will be offered in sale for a limited edition. With the pieces of this exhibition, Daisuke raises the question of what is the element that makes a photograph valuable. Is it the size, the quality of the paper, the number of copies or the sentimental value?
Yokota was chosen as the winner of the Foam Paul Huf award. Works from his series Site/Cloud were presented in a solo exhibition in 2014 at Foam. In 2013 his work was featured in the Talent Issue of Foam Magazine.

Foam is hosting the Matter from March 17- 4 June 2017

The artist focuses on ordinary objects of America's everyday life and transforms them into a photogenic subject. The photos are exceptional and travel the audience back in time in south America of late 60's early 70's. Memphis, the hometown of the photographer and the Mississippi Delta are the starting point of Los Alamos. Eggleston continues his road trip to New Orleans, Las Vegas, south Carolina ending at Santa Monica Pier.
